Abstracto

  • This paper analyzes the behavior of the Me Too movement in Twitter between December 8, 2018—a little over than one year after actress Alyssa Milano triggered an outcry over sexual harassment, assault and discrimination—and May 8, 2019 through the #MeToo hashtag and numerous other related hashtags. The #MeToo hashtag, representative of a social media trend which seeks to empower female victims of gender-based violence has had a significant international impact. In fact, it viralized beyond the United States in countries where women have turned to social media to raise their voices for women’s rights. More than three million tweets were collected during the five-month period previously mentioned using a digital tool called DMI-TCAT to observe the evolution of the #MeToo movement and its consequences inside and outside of Twitter.
