Abstracto
TiN, TiC and TiCN thin films were grown on an AISI 4340 steel substrate in order to comparetheir structure, morphology and mechanical properties. An Nd: YAG pulsed laser with 500 mJ, 1064 nmwavelength and 10 Hz was used to grow the films. An atomic force microscope was used to evaluate thehomogeneity of the films a well as the grain size. Droplets were detected when a scanning electronmicroscope was used. The tension test was used to determine the adhesion by applying a maximum load of 60kgf and no detachment effects were observed. In order to determine the fracture resistance a Rockwell Chardness test was carried out. The preliminary results show that the coatings are suitable in different industryapplications.
