Abstracto
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the multifunctional character of the productive chain of Amazonian rubber with regard to the improvement of farmers' living conditions and as an economically and environmentally sustainable alternative to other economic activities. We first provide a general description of the chain focusing on aspects, such as producer typologies, identification of stakeholders, social interaction, and the comparative advantages and specific risks of the natural environment. Using a series of indicators developed at CIRAD (Centre de Coopration Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Dveloppement) we then try to evaluate whether the studied chain can be classified as a RAI (Rural Agro-food Industry) and to which degree its specific resources are being activated. Finally, we analyse the collective construction of the territorial sustainability and the role of the rubber producing community in this Amazonian sub-region.Este artículo aborda la cadena productiva del caucho natural como ejemplo de la transformación del ecosistema en la frontera de colonización más activa de la Amazonía colombiana. Se pretende demostrar el carácter multifuncional de la cadena, en cuanto al mejoramiento de las condiciones de vida de los agricultores y como alternativa de producción económicamente rentable y sostenible a nivel ambiental. Para ello, se emplean herramientas tales como los indicadores del CIRAD (que permiten determinar el carácter de agroindustria rural sostenible de la cadena) y una matriz de análisis estructural (a partir de la cual se identifican sus principales problemas, las acciones de política, las estrategias y líneas de acción pertinentes para garantizar su sostenibilidad.
