Efecto de un programa de ejercicio físico controlado-supervisado sobre el perfil lipídico en mujeres postmenopáusicas en Bogotá, Colombia, 2007 Artículo académico uri icon

Abstracto

  • Introduction: lipid profile alteration-related metabolic changes are produced during the postmenopausal period, constituting the main risk factor for cardiovascular illness occurring in this population. It has been suggested that regular physical exercise (PE) can improve one's lipid profile, although not many studies have dealt with postmenopausal women. This investigation was aimed at evaluating the effect of a physical aerobic exercise programme on the lipid profile of postmenopausal women who had hyperlipidaemia. Methodology: this was a quasi-experimental study; 40 postmenopausal women participated in it. They undertook prescribed, controlled and supervised moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise, 4-5 days per week (16 weeks total duration). Total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL) and A-I and B apolypoprotein concentrations were evaluated. Results: a significant reduction was found in total cholesterol and triglyceride seric level and improved VO2 (pandlt;0.05). Conclusions: this physical exercise programme improved triglyceride and total cholesterol profiles, thereby reducing cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women, without incurring significant changes in other lipid variables.
