  • The Local Government Diagnostic of Childhood andAdolescence of Bogota ́-Colombia (Secretaria Distrital deIntegracı ́on Social, SDIS, 2012) states that domestic acci-dents are the third leading cause of violent death in chil-dren and adolescents aged 0-17 years in the capital.Between 2002 and 2011, the population most affected bysuch fatalities were young children. Several studies haveshown that children who live in chronic poverty are moreprone to accidents and that when an accident occurs, itcomes at an economic cost to the family, either with the lossof important human capital, or the cost of emergency med-ical care and ongoing treatment, which, in turn, both causeand perpetuate poverty (Maurice, Lavoie, Chapdelaine,Be ́langer Bonneau, andamp; Ellison, 1997; Peden et al., 2008).
